So, if you've been wanting a good deal on a kayak and accessories, now is the time!!

Now for everyone that just read that and said, "Why?"...this blog is for you.

A lot of things can change in just a few years!

When we first opened HOT Kayaks, my brother and I were both able to spend our free time at the shop because we didn't have a lot of responsibilities at home. Then came 2009/2010 and the birth of my nieces...with another one on the way in 2011! It's hard for my brother to find time to work at the shop when he's running around after the cutest babies ever. Why would anyone want to be at a kayak shop on the weekends when you have these two adorable kids at home?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/TSyLJ8LNEkI/AAAAAAAAAEs/2NjlMAuDv0s/s400/Ry%2Band%2BEm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560972642783924802" />

My reasons? Honestly, I'm burned out. I've spent the past 4 years working a full-time job as well as manning a kayak shop that requires 24-7 attention. I did it because I enjoyed it, but as 2010 dragged on, I realized I was no longer having fun. I'm ready to have a little time off. I'm ready to play a little more and maybe work a little less. I'm ready for someone else to spend their Saturday evenings behind a computer trying to figure out what the heck that $62 purchase at WalMart was for in order to balance the books. I'm ready to help my brother and his wife chase after those adorable babies...because I'm on a mission to be #1 Aunt for 2011.

Am I going to be out of the game completely? Probably not. You'll still see me on the water and hopefully I'll now have time to focus more on paddling and less on selling. You'll also probably see me around helping out at another kayak shop. I mean...I can't go cold Turkey! Kayak selling is in my blood now.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped us along the way. It's been an amazing run, but I'm kind of tired of running.

Cheers to 2011 and new adventures!
Colleen

Two Rivers, Two Days...with a random Fish Picture

It's summer. A busy time at the kayak shop which means that I rarely have time to actually get out and enjoy the Texas landscape. Last weekend, though, I made it a point to take a mini-vacation. I turned off my cell phone, left work early on Thursday, and even handed the kayak shops over to both Justin and Pavel...and didn't call them all weekend asking for updates (if you only knew what a huge deal that was for me).

The main reason for the mini-vacation was that friends and family were in town from overseas. My oldest niece, who lives in London, was visiting for 3 weeks. Plus, two very good friends (and honestly, I usually refer to them as family as well since I've lived in their home and vice-versa) were visiting from Germany.

So, what do you do when you have 3 days off from work and a truck full of foreigners plus a neighbor who hails from Arkansas? Head for the river! We loaded up as many kayaks as my Tacoma could carry and decided to do a multiple day/multiple river paddling trip. Day 1: We started off on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake Dam. Due to an agreement between the Guadalupe River Authority and Guadalupe Trout Unlimited, water is being consistently released from the dam all summer, which means that flows are perfect right now to paddle! As we all know, summer on the Guadalupe means tubing, so we hit the river early in an effort to make it through the rapids before a majority of the tubers woke up.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/TFHQPpmXv4I/AAAAAAAAAEI/EV0MyXiXeo8/s400/P1010575.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499405587279495042" />

The Guadalupe River, at this flow rate, is a great paddle. Most of the rapids are low Class II and easily navigable. Even the Devil's Playground, contrary to how its name sounds, is a fun, straight-forward rapid when the river flow rate is slightly elevated. The only wipeout of the day happened at The Chute. One person got sideways and lodged against two rocks, which caused a minor river pile-up. I have to confess that after we dislodged the pile-up and everyone was safely heading back down river, I took advantage of the fact that no one was paying attention to me and hiked back up to the top of The Chute with my Liquid Logic XP 9 to rerun the rapid. It was just too perfect not to play a little. Also, a quick shout-out to the kid that rescued our Pringles from a watery death in The Chute...and then proceeded to eat them. Sorry your Dad yelled at you, dude, but he had a good point--never eat something that has been opened and floats down river to you.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/TFHQhm8l0-I/AAAAAAAAAEQ/UrkNCEJ1sbY/s400/P1010583.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499405895805031394" />

And of course, the only way to top off the perfect river trip is to go eat BBQ. So, we drove up to the Salt Lick in Driftwood to top our evening off with BBQ, potato salad, jalapenos, and some tasty, tasty Pecan Pie!

Day Two: Found us on the San Marcos River from Pecan Park Retreat to Skulls Crossing. Since we had mastered the Guadalupe River, I was pretty confident in my crew's ability to navigate Cottonseed Rapids at the end of the San Marcos float. Once again, the recent rain has the San Marcos up and running! The extra water flow makes it a little easier to get through some of the obstacles, such as the broken dam just down river of the put-in. Usually, you have to paddle hard to not get sucked up against the portion of the dam that is still in the water. With the elevated flows, though, I found a majority of our crew floated right over before they even realized the concrete obstacle was there!

As we were finishing up the San Marcos float, a friend that had come on the trip with us paddled up to me and was beaming from all the excitement. He kept telling me how much he had enjoyed the kayaking trips. In fact, the whole group (though a little tired from all the traveling and paddling) kept saying how much they had enjoyed the rivers. Moments like those remind me how lucky we are to have such a gorgeous area within a few hours drive. Clear, clean water lined with cypress trees...it's picture perfect...and we get to enjoy it any time we want.

Also, just so you don't think I'm losing my edge...we paddled a local river about a week ago with one mission in mind--to catch some big Bass. We had rigged up the fly rods with large top-water poppers and hit the river around 6pm in the evening. After landing about a half dozen decent sized fish (around 2lbs or so), I told my fishing partner that I was done for the night since it was dark and I was hungry. He told me that I should toss a few more casts out. The next cast, I landed a 4lb+ bass...on my fly rod! What a way to top off the evening! The picture is horrible since all we had was my cell phone and it was dark outside, but you get the idea. It was big, and it was awesome.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/TFHTe7ve6aI/AAAAAAAAAEY/Np6C35dBjhg/s400/4+lb+bass.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499409148382472610" />

I heart Central Texas.

Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
254-773-9257

The Grapevine Debate and Decision

So, I guess we should just get the big news out there: We have decided to close the Grapevine shop.

Why?

Good question!

It has been a good year up in the DFW area. We've had the pleasure of making friends with some great people and have enjoyed hosting DFW Chapter meetings at the Grapevine shop (because who wouldn't like a 10 course meal prepared over a grill?). It's been crazy though. Between the miles I've racked up on my truck driving from Austin to Temple to Grapevine and back, to the long days spent leaving at 4am just to arrive back home at midnight....I'm tired.

Bo and I finally came to the realization that we were stretched too thin, and our personal and family lives were being impacted. My nieces are now learning to walk and talk and seem to be growing up faster than should be legally allowed...and I'm missing all the milestones because I'm on IH 35 between Grapevine and Temple.

What does this mean for HOT Kayaks?

First, the Temple shop is still going strong and will continue to go strong. In fact, we're now going to be able to focus more on outings and classes and all the fun things about owning a kayak shop!

Second, we will still support the DFW paddling community. We will try to attend the get-togethers (because I hope you all continue to hold monthly meet-ups!) and I'll try to learn how to cook something in a dutch oven over an open flame in order to contribute to the grub. Also, we will continue to have the online store and we SHIP FREE to commercial locations...including Dallas! So, you can still get your gear from us, call us, ask us questions, and even stop by when you're traveling through Temple.

Third, and most important, I do not want to have to haul a ton of boats back to Temple when the Grapevine shop closes. Emma Harvey has now joined the Harvey clan. She's healthy, full-term, and we can hold her! It's a totally different experience than what was going on this time last year...when Ryleigh was born at 24 weeks and spent over 3 months in the NICU.

So what does this mean for the kayak shop?? CHAOS! We're down a few workers to start and now we won't be seeing Bo's face up at the shop for awhile. So, if we all seem a little over-worked and stressed, just know that it's not because we don't love what we do. We're just having to run after a 1 yr. old who's learning to stand and walk and a 1 day old infant.

Although the bright side is that in 15 years, we'll have two more awesome employees at the shop. ;)

Congrats Bo and Jenny!
Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
Temple - 254-73-9257
Grapevine - 817-416-8886

Aloha 2010!

I know...it's February, and I'm just now posting a greeting to the new year. Contrary to how that looks, I'm SO EXCITED for 2010!!! 2009 was a rough year, but I have a feeling that 2010 is going to be stellar.

It started off on the right foot. In case you haven't noticed, our website (www.hotkayaks.net) has been totally redone (huge thanks to TMac for building such an awesome website). Now you can see all the kayaks and accessories that we sell, and more are being added daily. Not only can you see the items...you CAN BUY THEM!! We've got an online store!! With free shipping on all orders over $50. That's a great way to start off 2010.

So, Aloha 2010! Hopefully it will be a year full of rivers (with water), kayaks, friends, fishing, and a ton of online sales! :) :)

Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
Grapevine- 817-416-8886
Temple- 254-773-9257

New Holiday Sale-- "THE HOLIDAY GIVE-BACK"

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas (if the weathermen are right and we're going to get snow tomorrow)...

And in celebration of the Holiday Season, HOT Kayaks has decided to do something a little different. We're calling it THE HOLIDAY GIVE-BACK SALE!!

For the rest of December, we'll have in-store discounts and to top off those discounts, we'll donate an extra 5% of every kayak purchase to one of three different organizations/funds. When you purchase a kayak, you can choose from these three wonderful (and local) organizations:

1) PEACEABLE KINGDOM
Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children (located in Killeen, TX) is a place where children with special needs and chronic illnesses can celebrate the health-giving benefits of nature. Peaceable Kingdom serves 6,000+ children with chronic illnesses and special needs between the ages of 3 and 22, along with their families annually. These children come free of charge and without regard to race, religion or ability to pay. The retreat serves children whose abilities and disabilities vary. In spite of their differences, they share a common love for fun and friendships. www.peaceablekingdomretreat.com

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 102px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/SxgaLJnCzdI/AAAAAAAAADw/VEWiKPRo5Hc/s400/homeBanner2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411103731146214866" />

2) THE HARVEY FAMILY FUND
As some of you may know, Bo and his wife had twin baby girls born last Christmas. Huntleigh Elizabeth was born on December 27th, 2008 (at 23 weeks) and Ryleigh Ruth was born December 3rd, 2009 (at 24 weeks). They were both VERY premature. Miss Huntleigh Elizabeth put up a good fight, but she passed away shortly after birth. Miss Ryleigh Ruth is the toughest baby ever born and fought her way out of the NICU (3 weeks earlier than expected!!) and is now a strong, healthy baby. In honor of these two baby girls, my brother and his wife started a fund at Scott & White hospital that provides aid for parents that have children who are born premature as well as services for families who are dealing with the loss of a premature baby.

3) HEROES ON THE WATER
Based in Texas, and operated as our flagship program, Heroes on the Water serves all military personnel who have been wounded, injured or disabled while serving on active duty, in the reserves or national guard. The primary goal of the program is to assist these injured service members with their physical and mental recovery by introducing them to the therapeutic qualities of fishing from kayaks. The program allows the participants a chance to decompress from the stresses associated with combat and the physical rigors of rehabilitation. Participants enjoy these benefits while on guided fishing trips held at various locations around the country. www.heroesonthewater.org

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 273px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/SxgbV0qJdaI/AAAAAAAAAD4/pcKwCnZ0uVY/s400/i2christmas_tree.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411105014012278178" />

And that's the HOLIDAY GIVE-BACK SALE in a nutshell. Not only will you be receiving great in-store discounts, but an additional 5% of all kayak sales (excluding clearance/used kayaks) will be donated to one of the organizations/funds of your choice.

For more details, feel free to stop by and visit us either in the Temple or Grapevine shop.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

Heart of Texas Kayaks
Temple -- 254-773-9257
Grapevine -- 817-416-8886

Shop Closed for die Danken-Gebben

It's about that time. It was a little breezy, but atleast it wasn't raining. If it had been raining, I think Pavel would have quit on the spot. :) We had a decent turn-out, managed to meet a few new people, only had one person go in (but we'll blame it on Slick), and also got to meet a very nice tow truck driver with Temple Towing. All in all...a decent day.

Second, we still have some used and clearance kayaks on sale!! The 2009 Manta Rays, a few Ocean Kayak Tridents and Big Games, and a few other sit-inside kayaks. Lots to choose from and the weather outside is gorgeous. It's not time to put the kayaks away for the season yet!

And last but not least (and as you can probably tell), I made it back from my little vacation just fine. After a trip to Iowa to see my best friend, I'm very happy to be back in Texas. I did represent well though. Only a Texan could drive a tractor in pink shoes and still look like she knows what she's doing...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/SvIJXHJnwHI/AAAAAAAAACQ/bgdVbMiqMNw/s400/Tractor+Driving.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400389195831689330" />

Stop by the shop. The kayak we had in the shop was there on commission and we weren't 100% sure about carrying it until we saw the 2010 lineup.

Now, it looks like we'll officially be adding Freedom Hawk Kayaks to the lineup.

http://www.freedomhawkkayaks.com/

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 170px; height: 223px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/SoxZ29ypxkI/AAAAAAAAABo/WfvhPtd-pto/s400/col3_overhead.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371767256380982850" />

What finally sold us on this boat? In 2010, Freedom Hawk will be coming out with a 12 ft. version of their boat. The 14 ft. version was a little long for our local waters, but the 12 ft. version will not only cut down on weight but also allow you to paddle some of the Hill County rivers a little easier.

Hopefully we'll be able to have one of their 14ft. boats at our upcoming demo day! I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,
Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
Grapevine- (817) 416-8886
Temple- (254) 773-9257

Used Boats for Sale

So, we have a few more demo/used boats for sale for the season. In order to draw out the excitement, get you all pumped about demo days (because all new kayak lines will be available to test drive at our demo days), and...honestly...actually give me something to write about, I'll slowly be revealing all the new kayaks coming to a shop near you (if you line in the Grapevine or Temple area).

The new kayak line for today is....drumroll please...

Liquid Logic!

I know a few of you are thinking, Liquid who? That's probably because Liquid Logic is best known for their sweet, sweet whitewater kayaks. Last year, though, they came out with a few crossover kayaks...something to give you all a taste of the wildlife but with a drop down skeg that allows for easy paddling on open waters. What does that really mean? It's a kayak that you can take to the San Marcos, have a BLAST playing in the small rapids, and then kick back and drink a cold one while paddling the slow water in between.

For you ladies or smaller paddlers, check out the Liquid Logic Remix XP 9:

http://www.liquidlogickayaks.com/REMIX_XP9.cfm

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 104px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/SndJh_M0xtI/AAAAAAAAABY/rWQ6aXMNZVw/s400/LL_RemixXP9_gold_top.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365838329284970194" />

For all you other homegrown Texas boys, the Remix XP 10 is for you:

http://www.liquidlogickayaks.com/remix_xp10.cfm

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 96px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/SndJpj_EJHI/AAAAAAAAABg/-IcGTnpoJhI/s400/LL_RemixXP10_blue_side.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365838459418453106" />

This is probably the kayak line that I'm most excited about. Why? Because I currently paddle a Remix 59. The outfitting on the boat is the best out there (i.e. the seat will put you to sleep because it's so comfortable) and the performance of the boat is top notch. While the Remix 59 is a fun boat, it's not so much fun paddling the slack water between rapids. I am stoked to finally have a boat in our lineup that can fully handle the Central Texas rivers.

So there you go. The new kayak lineup has been jump started with the LL XP series!

Hands off, though. The first one to come in to the shop is mine! :)

Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
Grapevine- (817) 416-8886
Temple- (254) 773-9257

Interrupt OR for DEMO DAYS!

Just a quick heads up before I return to the Outdoor Retailer updates...demo days are around the corner and we've nailed down the final dates! It's been a long time since my brother, my mom, and I have had time to spend together, so we took this week as a semi-vacation and chance to hangout...as well as see all the new gear we're getting for the shop.

And there's lots of new gear.

So, I'm going to list out the new items in installments going from the smallest to the biggest news (and it's going to be good which makes it well worth the wait).

WATER BOTTLES

Within the next month, we'll have stainless steel water bottles with the HOT Kayaks logo in both the Temple and Grapevine shop and available to purchase for under $20! They'll comes in a bunch of different colors: white, steel, red, blue, green, copper, and (drumroll please) PINK!

LITTLE LIFE BACKPACKS

I know, these really don't have a whole lot to do with kayaking, but one of the best parts of the shop is seeing families spending time together. While Bo and I were at the show, we saw the cutest backpacks for kids 4 yrs. old and younger, and we thought they were a great way to get kids outside and toting their own gear. So, we'll now be carrying Little Life Backpacks at the shop.

And they're the cutest things you've ever seen.

All backpacks have a wildlife critter theme: one is shaped like a shell and colored like a turtle shell, one is a ladybug, one is a bumblebee, and one is a cow. All come with little rain hoods that the kids can wear...and the rain hoods have little eyes or antenna (depending on what critter it is).

I know my description is horrible but trust me, they're the cutest things you've ever seen and will be a the perfect way to get your little one to carry their own gear for a day out on the water!

WATER SHOES

We'll also be picking up a brand of water shoes. Right now, we're debating between Merrill, Keen, and New Balance. If you have an opinion...way in on the Facebook debate (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Temple-TX/Heart-of-Texas-Kayaks/84407409517). I personally like the Keen selection but love the New Balance water shoe coming out in the Spring of 2010. Decisions, decisions!

OK...so those are all the little additions. The new kayak brands and lines will be disclosed in an upcoming installment so check back often!

See you in the Grapevine shop this weekend. We still have a few SMOKIN' deals on in-stock kayaks...and I also got a few 2008 Tarpon and Search kayaks in stock!

Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
Temple- (254) 773-9257
Grapevine- (817) 416-8886

Should also Add...

We are probably going to have a few additions (beyond the new boats listed below) to the HOT Kayaks lineup. What does that mean? Bo and I spent about 8 hours test paddling all the new kayaks and some good-ole standbys. There are a few cool things coming out for 2010. Wilderness Sytems has an answer to the Native Ultimate...the WS COMMANDER! You have to say that with some inflection and chest pounding to truly invoke the meaning of the name. The Commander is a canoe/kayak hybrid with the ability to sit up high, adjust the seat, and carry a ton of gear. The tunnel hull allows easy standing as well. The jury is still out on this one. I like some of the features, but we'll see if it's good enough to knock the Ultimate off it's throne.

There have been a few revisions to the Manta Ray...including a new adjustable seat that Bo found to be super comfy and a rail system that will allow for the addition of a dashboard, Scotty mounts, etc.

But the kayak that Bo and I are super pumped about is the Perception Tribe line. It's not fancy, no frills, no track systems or cool seat adjustments...but it is a fun little boat that paddles well and has a great price point! It (along with the Commander) also have replaceable protection plates on the stern (because we all know that we drag our boats every now and then).

Mush more to come...but I have limited internet connection and someone breathing down my neck to use this computer. :)

Bo is back in town now and I'll be back in town on Saturday. Until then, stop by and chit-chat with Ben and Charlie...who have been holding down the forst for the past week. Thanks guys!!

See you in a few,
Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
Grapevine: 817-416-8886
Temple: 254-773-9257

Status Update

I realize that title sounds like I'm about to update you on my personal life, but no worries...

This is actually a status update on the Grapevine shop! We have been slowly but surely moving in over the past few weeks. For those that haven't seen it since the cookout, the walls have been painted and my #1 employee (yeah Charlie...I'm talking about you) and I spent a day hanging gridwall and trying to organize the shop a little.

And the results....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/Slylx3vZDxI/AAAAAAAAABA/16aqd4XLbrE/s320/shop1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358339932858945298" />

And the other side....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0iKCf678GQs/SlymBU92-uI/AAAAAAAAABI/uVionYrhDws/s400/shop2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358340198402292450" />

Hudson is settling in well and has taken over the job as bouncer/security/bodyguard...or actually he's more of a doorstop that likes to eat popsicles when it gets too hot. Not only did my brother get to celebrate his first ever Father's Day, but we also opened the doors on the new Grapevine shop and broke it in properly with beer, burgers, Uncle Earl's Spicy Sausage wraps, and great friends.

Thank you to everyone who made the trip to Grapevine on Saturday. It was absolutely amazing that so many people came and lent a helping hand moving, cleaning, rearranging, and basically setting up the new place. We're still in the beginning stages, but after a few hours of work, the place was starting to look GOOD! Now, all I need to do is slap on a coat of paint this week, get a few shipments of more boats in (yes...more boats...we're going to be full before you know it) and we will be in business.

Our Grapevine store hours will officially start Wed. July 1st and we'll be open:

Wednesday thru Friday from 11am to 7pm
Saturday 11am to 5pm
Sunday noon to 5pm

It's so exciting to be starting this new shop...we've come so far in the past two years! My family loves a good reverse auction. Plus my dad is an active member and was on the committee to set this up...so of course we went to show our support (and did I mention my family loves the reverse auctions?).

As usual, we also bought a few (or A LOT of) bucket raffle tickets.

By the end of the night, we didn't win the big, grand prize, but we had won:

1 (one) Giant Party in a Basket that included a bottle of gin, tonic, glasses, olives, the works!

1 (one) really cool Longhorn shaped paperweight (which I gifted to my brother since he's the teasip in the family)

1 (one) set of bamboo bowls (which Julia ended up taking home after she and I played a very intense round of rock-paper-scissors)

and...drumroll please...

1 (one) 50-pack of Bic lighters complete with outdoor scenes on the cover.

The Bic lighters went up to the shop and the Gin Party basket should be finding its way to my house shortly. Luckily evening Mass had let out by the time I walked out of the parish hall with all the goodies. :)

I love the reverse auction!

Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
254-773-9257

Facebook Invasion

Yep, we've invaded Facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Temple-TX/Heart-of-Texas-Kayaks/84407409517

Facebook is going to be Bo's domain, so we should keep you up-to-date on all the Temple and Grapevine happenings between my blog and Bo's status updates (that's what they're called right?...I hope I'm using the correct lingo).

Also, looks like we'll have a new boat on display at the Temple shop. As most everyone that has been in to the shop in the last 6 months knows, we're permanently short on space. We looked at building on to the current location...but then had an even better idea...why not open a second shop?

So, to all our customers in the DFW area that have said, "Why don't you all just open a shop up north?" We listened!

HOT Kayaks is now going to have a second location in Grapevine, TX. The best part? The Grapevine store will have normal business hours. No more having to wait until the weekend to see our smiling faces. :)

All the details will come shortly (Location, Grand Opening day, demo day, etc.), but I just wanted to give you all a heads up that a new shop is coming to town and should be open in the next few weeks!

Hope to see you all there,
Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
254-773-9257

A Little Tease Part II

Part of the big news:

Heart of Texas Kayaks is expanding...

More news to come next week!

Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
254-773-9257

A Little Tease

I've been sitting on some exciting news now for a few weeks...and hopefully we'll get to announce it soon! Looking back, though, I don't think my mom every missed spending time with us, supporting us, or taking us to practice or riding lessons. What's funny is that after all that work, not many people even know she's Dr. Diane Dowdy. :) She's never been one to brag.

She's incredibly smart, warm, entertaining and easy to love. I think everyone that has come into the shop and met my mother has seen that.

So in order for my brother and I to spend some quality time with our Mom, we're closing up shop on Sunday May 10th.

Hope you all get to spend some time with your moms as well!

Happy Mother's Day, Pretty Lady. I'm not sure I can really pinpoint what happened to Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. It's just been a blur of activity....getting kayaks in, rigging them, and getting everyone setup with their new boats!

Thank you to everyone who braved the wind and cold and came out to our demo day last Saturday. We had a great turnout, and as usual, it's always nice to put faces with names. We almost made it the whole day without anyone going in the drink, until one certain person (you know who you are!) decided to test out sitting side-saddle in rough water. My favorite quote of the day: "Atleast now I know I can get back into my kayak quickly."

In case you didn't see, we also made the paper! A great picture of Richard and Adam paddling kayaks was in the Temple Daily Telegram on the second front. Julia also snapped some pictures of all the demoers out demoing. I'm going to print off a few this weekend and put them up at the shop. Feel free to stop by and see if you've made the Wall of Fame. :)

I have to admit. I'm personally taking some time away from the kayak shop this evening to take care of some other pressing business....VOLLEYBALL!!! Our team isn't doing so hot this season (we've won one game...because the other team didn't show up), but I have a good feeling about tonight. GO CHUPACABRAS!!!!

See you all back at the kayak shop tomorrow,

Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
254-773-9257

Demo Day at Arrowhead Point on Lake Belton

It's time! In preparation for her homecoming, we went and picked up a few fun things for her last weekend, and it hit me as I was walking through the baby clothes...I'm going to be her favorite Aunt. Why am I already claiming victory in the Great Aunt Campaign? Because every little girl wants a pony...and Aunt Colleen has one that Ry can ride when she's old enough! I win! So to all her other Aunts, you can pack up your "A" game and go home because this competition is over. :) This win totally makes up for the fact that I'm only second in the College Hoops bracket tourney.

Realization number two about my new neice: it's never too young to get them prepped to work at the kayak shop. Along with Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax" (a must read for any and all), I think I'm going to put the Wilderness Systems catalog and books on paddling Texas rivers on the required reading list. Hopefully she'll be a wildlife biologist AND an excellent shop employee someday. An aunt can hope right?

Enjoy a few pictures of our future shop worker:

Pope Ryleigh

Burrito Baby
(because when she's all swaddled, she's about the size of a Freebirds monster burrito)

Oh yeah, demo day info will follow shortly...but don't you agree that this information was much more important?!

Rock on Ry!

Colleen
Heart of Texas Kayaks
254-773-9257

DEMO DAY! Julia, Eddie, Bo...help?!

Anyways, on to more exciting topics, Heart of Texas Kayaks now has a blog! I think it's exciting atleast. It means that we'll be able to post all our sale events, new inventory, my thoughts on our new inventory, new boats, and all the cool happenings.
